Yick Wo v. Hopkins, Sheriff
Sang Lee owner of Yick Wo, a laundry mat in San Fransico,  was fined $10 for operating a laundry mat (in a wooden building) without a permit. After suing for a writ of habeas corpus, he was imprisoned for not paying the fine.  The case escalated to the Supreme Court of the United States and decided against the inferior courts, and stated that it was unlawful to imprison someone for such reasoning.
